Jumping off points in life, do you take the leap?

At jumping off points in your life, do you take the leap?

Jumping off with a resident sting ray

In the midst of planning for our Gadabout Gals trip to Belize, I came across of a picture on Instagram of a young girl jumping with abandon off the pier of our vacation rental.  It spoke to me.  That girl seemed to embody a fearless abandon that I longed for at the time.  I knew I had to recreate that scene for myself.  I wasn’t about to let that young thing have all the fun.

It was scarier than I expected on the day of the envisioned jump.  I had a cheerleading squad on deck to encourage me that I am that girl.  I have a rule… no swimming in water I can’t see clearly what I swimming with.  Even though the fear was real, I jumped.  I did not look as carefree as that young thing, but it was a rush.  I don’t remember how I exactly got out of the water, but I’m sure it was in record time.

Later we learned that there was a resident sting ray living under the dock.  I pondered my jump.  Would I have jumped if I knew about our pet sting ray we affectionately named Franklin?

Jumping into the crystal blue

When the Gadabout Gals planned our epic trip to Italy, I had no plans of brave adventure.  I felt more romantic than fearless.  The group planned several boat trips with Blue Star Positano to frolic on the Amalfi coast in crystal blue water.  It is gorgeous!

On a day trip to Capris, our captain Massimo anchored us near a cave to go swimming.  I was thrilled.  Crystal clear water meant that I can see everything!  Great!  That is until our captain started to throw bread crumbs out for the fish.  I freaked out!

This time I could see exactly what I was swimming with.  Was I really ready to jump in?  Would I be able to swim into the amazing cavern????

Fun fact: Turns out Gadabout Kelly is WAY more fearless than me!

Yes, of course!

Jumping off points

My stories of tested bravery has me thinking about jumping off points in life.  How do you respond to the times when you face fear.  Do you jump?  Or do you wait until you are ready?

Tiffany Eckhardt, life coach for women who are ready to take creative control of life.

Would I have been ready to jump off the pier in Belize if I knew I would be swimming with a resident sting ray?  Yes, of course.  I jumped in the crystal blue waters of Amalfi, despite the fish I knew I’d be swimming with.

In the new book, Everything is Figure Outable Marie Forleo addresses the idea of starting before you are ready.  She uses a technique called future tripping.  Most people view future tripping as the tendency to worry about the future at the expense of the present.  Marie flips that trip to ask herself, “In ten years, will I regret NOT doing this?”

There are two types of pain you will go through in life: the pain of discipline and the pain of regret. Discipline weighs ounces, while regret weighs tons.  ~ Jim Rohn

In other words, would my 60 year old self regret not taking the leap in Belize or in Italy?  I never want to disappoint my future self!

How many times do we miss out on an amazing rush of adventure because our thoughts convince us that the worse case scenario is definitely in our future?

Or worse yet, how many times do we miss out on any opportunity in life because you did not feel ready?  The truth that Marie Forleo reveals is, “You are never ready to do the important things you’re meant to do.”

Manage YOUR jumps

It is very simple.  Manage your mind, manage your life.  The way you think about the opportunities to leap matter.

Thoughts produce feelings, which create action.  It’s all the thought, Feel, Act Cycle.  After years of wondering if there was something seriously wrong with me, I learned a couple tools that I wish my twenty year old self knew.  In my FREE guide to Unlock The Secret To Knowing What You Want In Life I share how YOU can use the power YOUR thoughts to create the life you really want.  I am living proof!

Final 2019 message on failure

This is my final message on failure, for 2019. I’ve talked a lot about the fine art of failing.

Failure is not taught in school.  Yet, all the successful people I’ve studied this year have harnessed the power of failing forward.

Recognize YOUR script on failure.

  1. Can YOU agree?
  • Life is 50/50 good & bad.
  • Nothing worth having in life is handed to you.
  • There is a lot you can learn from failure if you are curious.
  • Failure can be good or bad.  You decide.

2. What is failure?

Failure is simply YOUR unmet expectations.  No one can define failure for you.

2. How do you view failure?

  • Do you view it as something that happens to you from outside sources?
  • Do you view yourself as the failure, somehow broken and not capable?

Either approach to failure will not serve you!  YOUR approach to failure becomes a familiar story in your mind that will block any attempt to pursue greatness.  You are the captain of your own destiny.

For my recent Fail Friday Facebook Live, I shared Pema Chödrön’s book Fail. Fail Again. Fail Better.  Her wisdom can help flip the script on the olé familiar story.

  • View failures as portals of discovery, a chance to get creative and to learn something new.
  • Be willing to feel a wide range of feelings when things don’t go the way you want them to.  {Rage, upset, sadness, loneliness}.
  • Notice what you do in this space. Do you blame others?  Do you call yourself a failure?

Get curious about your failure thoughts

Don’t believe all the stories that play on repeat in your mind, simply get curious about them.  Take time to ask yourself questions.

What is your inner dialog saying?

How does the story impact your feelings?

What actions do you take when you feel that way?

What results are you getting from that space?  How is that working for you?

OK… enough talk about failure. Let’s Kick 2020 into gear by celebrating the 2019 successes.

Success is defined as something that works out the way you expected it to. Focus on your 2019 successes and toot your own horn!

Your homework, take a hot second to think good thoughts about yourself. Trust me it is fun!

1. Make a list of ten successes you are proud of from 2019.

  • Did you loose weight?
  • Did you read the books you wanted to read?
  • Did you travel?
  • Did you buy that thing you’ve always wanted?
  • Did you learn a language?
  • Did you repair a relationship?
  • Did you start a business?
  • Did you reach a financial goal?
  • Did you get that raise?
  • Did you learn a new craft?

Only YOU can determine what can be on that list.

I firmly believe in the power of creating the life you want.

What ever is on your list add the sentence “I created this.”  Friend, I promise you did something out of the ordinary to achieve that result.

  • I lost twenty pounds and can wear that dress.  I created this.”

2. Now imagine what you want to report on December 31, 2020.

Take time to imagine yourself on December 31,2020.  Can you imagine how you will feel when you make your list of 2020 accomplishments at the end of next year? On the last day of 2020 what do you feel most proud of? What actions did you take? What results are you celebrating?

From this space, make your future list NOW.  Blow YOUR own mind in 2020!  Become the person of your dreams!

I am a product of the product.

I spent nearly 50 years believing I was a failure, like there was something fundamentally wrong with me. I finally took hold of my thought life and am curious about my beliefs. I am proud of the person I am becoming.

I did the homework, and was blown away by my list of accomplishments in 2019.  Yes, I had unmet expectations.  I am not a failure. Failure doesn’t happen to me. I decide what it means in my life. I am free to recognize my own script and flip it!

Creating my 2019 list inspired me to create a list for 2020.  I’m excited to create the 2020 Tiff!  This is going to be the best decade of my life!

Let me help you create the life you want in 2020!  I will help you identify exactly where you are, where you want to go and the obstacles that will be in the way.  We’ll make a plan to hurdle any failure and celebrate all successes!

Are you Zesty?

Does your success have a deadline?

This is a big year for me!  I became a certified life coach, opened our first guest house and turned 50 years young.  I’m actually very excited about my big milestone year, despite the COVID shutdowns.  I truly believe this will be the best decade of my life.  I always love to have something zesty to look forward to.

Honestly, it did bother me a little that it took 50 years to hit my stride.  I found myself thinking, “I should be successful by now.”  The word “should” is a red flag!  Should we be anything?

I changed my thought to, “this is my season!”

Say the two thoughts to yourself.

“I should be successful by now”

“This is my season!”

Don’t they feel completely different? I feel motivated to discover what I’m truly capable of with the thought “This is my season!”

AND SERIOUSLY…. Does success have a deadline?

It’s time to be zesty!

“A seasoned woman is spicy,” Gail Sheehy

There are so many examples of women who launched successful businesses later in life.  Martha Stewart, Julia Childs, Vera Wang, Estée Lauder, etc.  Even if you aren’t interested in starting a business in this season, these women are reminders that it is never too late to create the life of your dreams.

A seasoned woman is definitely not a rookie.  She has experienced life and knows how to turn obstacles into possibilities.  She has learned to be ok with her authentic self.  In fact, she has the confidence to be zesty in this season of life!

Three things a seasoned woman KNOWS

1.  A seasoned woman is well aware life is 50% good and 50% bad.

2.  A seasoned woman understands the importance of failing forward.

3.  A seasoned woman knows her seasoning is unique and valuable.

What are YOU going to do with your season?

The Pulitzer Prize winning poet, Mary Oliver once posed the question,

“Tell me, what is it you plan to do with this one wild and precious life?”

Do you believe that you can create the life of your dreams at any season of life?

I do!

This decade of my life will be zesty!  I have learned the art of failing forward and am ready to create the life of my dreams through intentional thought management.  I will be gritty, seasoned with both passion and perseverance.

I’d love to help YOU believe the best years are ahead.  Schedule a FREE mini session with me!
